Free to cancer survivors. Advanced registration is required. Dance for Joy brings peace, recovery, and a sense of community to cancer survivors. Dance for Joy classes are led by both TTD Co-Founders Lynne Belsky and Lisa Gold.
Read on to learn about the origins of these classes:
Many dancers instinctively know how important it is to get back to class after an injury or illness. Lynne Chervony Belsky, M.D. and Lisa Gold—a duo who are cousins, dancers, and breast cancer survivors—found that conventional dance classes were difficult during early recovery.
A dear friend and mentor, Carol Walker, had always taught Lynne and Lisa to “dance for joy”—her personal motto. Lisa and Lynne found that they had similar shared desires to create and teach dance classes that go beyond just the steps. This inspired them to create a dance class just for cancer survivors where they could feel the comfort and compassion of being with others while enjoying the freedom and therapeutic aspects of dance.
Dance for Joy had its inaugural class in October 2016, with people of different ages and experiences in dance, who all wanted to “feel better”. The class did just that. Lynne and Lisa prepared a ballet-based class with modern dance influences to high spirited and heart-warming music. The results had everyone ecstatic and revitalized. One participant stated “she hadn’t felt this beautiful in years” as she broke down in tears of happiness.
We now incorporate our Dance for Joy students in all our classes. We also have an ongoing fundraising effort to defray the cost of classes for these individuals.
